Summary of organization

Democratic Budget Movement, locally known as 'Gonotantrik Budget Andolon' aka DBM, is a social movement and platform grown organically in Bangladesh and supported by grassroots citizens, opinion leaders, academia, media, youth and social institutions since 2009 to mobilize people’s voice for decentralization of national budget. DBM questions the state around progressive distribution of resources to promote economic justice.

Detail description of organization

As a platform DBM is growing over 32 districts and represented by smallholder farmers, workers, feminist movements, indigenous communities and youth campaigns. People's participation in national planning and budgeting process, decentralization and devolution are our key ask to the state. DBM organize People's Budget Assembly in contrast to the official budget assebmly to claim political space and place people's demand before the policy makers and other stakeholders. DBM from the very beginning joined, facilitated and organized actions around WSF process in South Asia and beyond. Agriculture budget, labor and employment, education financing, health financing, gender budget, climate budget, district budget are key thematic areas for DBM. Amid COVID, DBM is advocating for financing social protection scheme and green economic recovery to protect the life and livelihoods of the commoners. Distribution of resources amoung the indigenous communities, persons with disabilities, dalit communities are alse key areas of concern of DBM. Progressive spending on the above issues and for the communities, tax justice, budget transparency are critical issues for DBM.
